Hidden near Errington British Colombia in Arrowsmith Coombs County sits a short trail that will take you to another world! This quarter mile hike takes you to a world where crystal clear water shines green, moss covered roots and trees break up the spotted rocks along the river, and in the distance a waterfall break the silence. No this isn’t some magical world in Oz or Narnia, this is Englishman River Falls Provincial Park in Parksville British Columbia, Canada, and it’s one of the most awe-inspiring parks in all of British Colombia.
Englishmen River park has a history that dates back hundreds of years. Legend says the name comes from the discovery of a European settlers skeleton at the base of the falls. Folklore says a “Caucasian male” drowned while attempting to cross the river. Indigenous people discovered the skeleton at the base of the lower falls.
The park we know today was established in 1940 to protect the old growth Douglas Fir trees and is very similar to MacMillian Provisional Park. The trail to the lower falls is well maintained and accessible to most hikers. Just walk downhill along the path and you’ll come to an overlook. Once at the overlook you’ll find a crystal clear pool and slow moving river. During the summer months the water levels are low and provide great swimming opportunities. In the distance you can hear the sound of a roaring waterfall and the upper falls.
To get to the upper falls, you have to walk back uphill (which can be steep) past the parking lot. From there the trail follows the river and you’ll come to a bridge and that is where you’ll get the best view of the upper falls. Much like the lower falls, the trail is well maintained and accessible for host hikers.
If you’re looking for a place to sit and reflect, or write a blog post, Englishmen River Falls Provisional Park is the perfect spot. The old growth and green tint can offer a refreshing perspective. If you’re in the area of Parksville British Colombia looking for something new be sure to make this special place.
