Steep Rock Preserve is the largest of the four preserves owned by the Steep Rock Association. At 998 acres, there is something for everyone regardless of hiking experience. Hikers can walk along the Shepaug River or explore the rock carvings of a 19th-century train tunnel. Trails range from easy to moderate depending on the distance and what visitors want to see.
The main attraction at the park is the train tunnel. Constructed between 1871 and 1872, this 235ft tunnel was constructed by hand using pick axes and dynamite. The rail system was part of the Shepaug Valley Railroad. The tunnel was in use until 1948 when the railroad ceased operation. Once the railroad closed, the cold, dark and damp tunnel became a quick hotspot for hikers and explorers in the region. visitors can still see the remnants of construction on the walls and ceiling.
Another attraction for visitors alike is the lookout. Sitting at an elevation of 776ft, hikers are treated to a breathtaking view of the Shepaug River snaking through the valley. The hike to the top is a little strenuous, but the view will be worth it. In the fall, those who are willing to venture to the top will see stunning colors of red and yellow as far as the eye can see.
The last attraction is the Holiday House. Constructed in 1892 and completed in 1893 served as a retreat for women affiliated with the St. Bartholomew’s Church in New York City. Today the house has been overrun by the elements and nature. Hikers who visit the landmark can expect to see the stone foundation and footprint of the once summer retreat.
Much like the other preserves owned by the Steep Rock Association, there is something for everyone. Hikes to an overlook, an abandoned train tunnel and tranquil sounds of nature can all be found. However, cell service is limited here, so preloading and preplanning is required.
