Redding, CT
Difficulty: Medium
Redding, Connecticut has a population of 8,000, but with a small town feel, this hidden gem of CT could be hard to find. The only major roadway running along its outskirts is route 7 to the west. Otherwise this small town is not frequented by passersby too often. However, often times these small towns have the best hiking!
Saugatuck Falls Natural Area is a 300 acre parcel of land owned by the town of Redding. Purchased in March of 1968, it was the single largest purchase of land by the town. If not for the purchase, the land would have been sold for development.
The network of trails allows hikers to experience the tranquil environment surrounding the Saugatuck River. One of the key landmarks of the hike is the waterfall. Following the white blazes trail, you’ll first pass through an open field that looks like something out of a fairytale. The hum of birds and insects will make you feel like you’re being transported to a far away land. Once through the field you’ll walk along the rocks of the Saugatuck River, enjoying the relaxing sounds of a streaming brook. After about .8miles you will reach a 10ft cascade waterfall. This is a popular spot for photographs and taking in the relaxing scenery.
While the waterfall is one of the most popular attractions, the hike can be slightly challenging. The trail along the brook traverses the face of the hill (walking parallel to the river on a hill sloping toward the river), which can be slippery and contain roots protruding out of the ground. If the waterfall isn’t what you’re looking for, there are plenty of other trails to choose from. Whether you’re looking for an easier path along the Saugatuck River, or want to just spend time admiring the sounds of nature, Saugatuck Falls Natural Area has you covered. If you come here, make sure you keep your pets on leash and be vigilant. Bobcats, bears and other wildlife have been spotted here. They often keep their distance from people, but as always be alert and give them their space.
Hiking here is very easy, trails are well marked and easy to follow. A 5 mile hike here gives you a great workout without leaving you feeling exhausted. Yet even after 5 miles, there’s always a new path or trail to discover.
