Rocky Hill, CT
Difficulty: Easy
Nestled in the hills of Rocky Hill, CT, this abandoned rock quarry is now a park full of trails and abandoned buildings. The 84 acre state owned park offers views and Hartford and Glastonbury. First opened in 1991, this former rock quarry has buildings and history dating back to the 1900’s
Originally founded as the Rocky Hill Stone Company, the quarry was in operation from 1901 to 1957. Part of the quarry was crafted out by hand, while later sections were blasted out using dynamite. Dump carts moved crushed rock from the quarry to trains traveling along the Connecticut Valley Railroad (est. 1871). In 1948 the Wethersfield Ski Club used the northern most face to ski. A 1936 Buick was used to power the towropes. Remains of this Buick can still be seen today along the blue trail.
Aside from the Buick, remains of the crusher house and compressor house can be found along the yellow trail. These buildings were likely built in the 1920’s and decommissioned in the 1950’s when the quarry closed. Today, the buildings are attractions for visitors from all over the region. Other ruins can be found along the yellow trail, some date back to 1900 and were part of the original buildings.

This hidden historical landmark is a must see for anyone looking to learn about local history and get some exercise in at the same time. Casual hikers, families and pets are all welcome at this park in central Connecticut. The history plus the ease of the trails make this a perfect spot for beginners.
