Kent, CT
Difficulty: Easy
Situated on Falls Brook, Kent Falls State Park is one of the most popular parks in Connecticut. Falls Brook is a tributary to the Housatonic River, meaning the brook eventually joins the Housatonic River, which empties into Long Island Sound. Kent Falls is not one waterfall, it is a series of waterfalls along the brook. Combined, the falls will drop about 250 in just under a quarter mile. The largest drop is approximately 70 feet before continuing onto the remaining cascades.
Upon arrival, hikers are greeted by an open recreation area that offers a spot for picnics, lounging and overall relaxation. Hikers are also greeted to one of the 9 covered bridges in the state, 3 of them are considered historic. This particular bridge was constructed in 1974 for pedestrian access across Falls Brook. Once hikers cross this bridge, it is a straight walk to the base of the falls.
Access to the falls is pretty easy, there is a well constructed wooden stair system that scales the right side of the falls. There is also plenty of observation decks at each level of the falls. While you can observe the falls from many different levels, access to the falls outside of the posted trails is strictly forbidden and can result in removal from the park. Depending on the day and recent rainfall will determine how much water is flowing and intense the falls are.
Kent Falls State Park is the perfect place for a family outing or a nice morning walk with the dog (must be leashed at all times). The trails are very easy, well marked and the sound of the waterfall delivers a tranquil experience like no other. However, if you are looking for a longer hike with scenes of mountains and various trail elements you will be disappointed. Most of the hike/park involves walking on constructed bridges and stairs and the main attraction is the falls. The left side of the falls does not have any constructed pathways and resembles more of a “hike”.
Parking: 462 Kent Cornwall Road, Kent, CT, 06757 (NOTE: some attendees may need to pay for access to the park. Check local listing and the CTDEEP website for further details).
