South Mountain Reservation is located about 20 miles west of New York City. Standing at 25ft in height, Hemlock Falls is one of the most popular waterfalls in Northeastern New Jersey. There are several trails that will lead to the falls. The most popular is the yellow-blaze Lenape Trail and return via the summit trail. This loop is ~2 miles and the average hiker can complete the loop in about 45 minutes.
South Mountain Reservation is about 2,000 acres in size and contains 2 waterfalls (Hemlock Falls and Blackrock Falls). Hemlock Falls gets its name from the tall hemlock trees that tower over the rivers and waterfalls. Originally purchased in 1895, the land has grown to contain a wide assortment of activities. South Mountain Reservation also contains a small zoo, an ice skating arena and an adventure ropes course.
The land of South Mountain Reservation also has some historical significance. Washington Rock was home to a beacon constructed by George Washington to observe British troop movements on Staten Island. On June 23rd, 1780 Newark Militia and Connecticut forces ambushed British troops on their way to attack George Washington’s army in Morristown. Fighting occurred on Vaux Hill Road and Galloping Hill Road and ended at the base of mountain. This battle would be known as the Battle of Springfield and was one of the last conflicts of the Revolutionary War; which ended the British foothold in New Jersey and the North. Both the British Army and American Militias suffered casualties in this battle.
Another landmark along the trail that can easily be missed are some stone pillars. At first glance, it appears these pillars are just random assortments of stones. Instead, they are what remain of a picnic pavilion constructed in 1908.
Upon reaching the falls, hikers are treated to a dazzling waterfall that is a great adventure for the whole family. However, the adventure doesn’t stop there. Hikers can ascend a set of stone steps to reach the top of the falls. Those that decide to make the trek are treated to a unique view of a waterfall and the reservation.
The area around the waterfall is popular among trails runners and all areas of the reservation are pet friendly! AT the waterfall, there are plenty of benches and places to relax before beginning the walk back to the parking lot. Overall, this nestled spot in northeastern New Jersey is a perfect getaway for the family. The reservation offers hiking, history, family activities and outings unlike any other!
