About 5 miles south of Camdenton, Missouri is Ha Ha Tonka State Park. The park gets its name from the Osage Indian phrase meaning “laughing spirit” in reference to the springs throughout the region. Sitting in the Ozarks, this park is a must see for hikers! Ha Ha Toni’s State Park is home to Missouri’s 12th largest spring and features plenty of overlooks, caves, sink holes and other natural wonders. There is even the ruins of a stone castle.
One of the most notable features of this 3,700 acre park is the stone castle ruins. Construction began in 1905 by a Kansas City businessman named Robert McClure Snyder Sr. Mr. Snyder fell in love with the land after visiting and wanted a second home close to the natural springs. His goal was to model the structure after 16th century castles in Europe. Sadly Mr. Snyder did not live to see it completed, he was killed in one of Missouri’s first car accidents in 1906. The project was finished by his sons in 1922. The family used it as a second home until the 1930’s until it became a hotel. However, in 1942 a fire destroyed the structure. The state purchased the land in 1978 and incorporated the ruins into the state park accessible today.
While there is no swimming allowed at the park, there is plenty of water. Home to Missouri’s 12th largest spring, the clear bluish water discharges about 48 million gallons into the Ozarks every day. The water seems to bubble and clean itself as it winds through the limestone and carbonate rocks. Sitting atop an overlook it is easy to see why this area has attracted visitors from all over for so long!
The castle ruins and springs are just some of the features unique to this area. There are some geological features to observe as well. The rock layers are rich in dolomite, gypsum and limestone. These rocks are easily dissolved by water. Since water is always flowing to the Ozarks, the region is full of sinkholes, cave systems that have been carved out over millions of years.
These geological formations plus the history make Ha Ha Tonka a unique spot for hikers and adventure seekers alike. There are plenty of trails which are well marked and easy to follow. Whether you’re looking for a casual walk around a natural spring, or a strenuous hike spanning several miles, this park is for you!
