Chester/Blandford, MA
Difficulty: Medium
Nestled in the Berkshire Mountains in western Massachusetts, this 2,000- acre public state forest sits in the towns of Chester and Blandford Massachusetts. The view at the top of the overlook located along the Sanderson Brook Falls Loop trail is a must see to any Berkshire hiker. The colors of fall turn an amazing view into a special site unique to western Massachusetts. The land was originally acquired in 1924 from a few lumber companies. The forest features ruins from an old mining operation, a stunning overlook and a 60ft cascade at Sanderson Brook.
The trail head to the Sanderson Brook Falls Loop is located off route 20 adjacent to the parking area. The initial trail is wide gravel road that will eventually fork to form the loop. Going left (clockwise loop) will take you up an incline for about a mile until you reach the overlook. The hike uphill is rocky and can be strenuous if you are not accustomed to terrain. You need to be cautious during the incline, some spots were not well marked and it’s very easy to stray off the trail. When you reach the top, in about a mile, the view is worth it!
If you continue straight at the fork (counterclockwise loop), you will continue along a wide gravel path to a stream in about .5 miles. This is a good place to sit and listen to the soothing sounds of nature. Following the trail past the stream will take you to what remains from a small mining operation during the early 1900s. The elevation change around the ruins isn’t nearly as bad as the elevation change near the overlook.
Choosing which direction to hike this trail depends on comfort and experience. If you prefer to get the steep elevation done early and reap the rewards of a stunning view of the Berkshires; then hike clockwise. If you prefer starting your hike with a tranquil walk though the woods and ending with a view (as long as you don’t mind hiking down a steeper grade), then hike counterclockwise. Once you finish your excursion, head into the small town of Chester, MA for some lunch. This small town is everything you’d expect from a small New England village; and who knows, maybe you’ll have a new love for New England and the Berkshires.
